.pkpass viewer and validator

Open a .pkpass file to see the pass and everything inside it, and check it against Apple's rules, from pass.json to the signing certificate. It runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

What’s inside a .pkpass file

A .pkpass file is a zip archive. Apple Wallet reads these files from it:

  • pass.json: the pass’s content, style, colors, barcode and update settings.
  • Images: icon.png (required), plus optional logo, strip, thumbnail, background and footer images at @2x and @3x.
  • manifest.json: a SHA-1 hash of every other file, so Wallet can tell if anything was changed.
  • signature: a signature of manifest.json made with a Pass Type ID certificate from Apple.

Fixing a pass that fails

Most problems come from building passes by hand: an expired certificate, a hash that no longer matches, or a missing icon. WalletPassBuilder builds and signs every pass for you, for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, and can update passes already saved on phones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a .pkpass file on a computer?+

Drop it on this page. You'll see a preview of the pass, its fields, images and pass.json, and whether it's built and signed correctly. To add it to Apple Wallet, open the file on an iPhone.

Is my .pkpass file uploaded?+

No. The file is opened and checked in your browser. Nothing in it is sent to our servers.

Why won't my pass add to Apple Wallet?+

The most common causes are a signing certificate that has expired or doesn't match the passTypeIdentifier and teamIdentifier in pass.json, a file changed after the manifest was made, a missing icon.png, or the files being inside a folder in the zip. The checker flags each of these.

What does the validator check?+

The zip structure, that pass.json is valid and has the required keys and one pass style, the SHA-1 hashes in manifest.json, barcode formats, colors, dates, the web service settings, image sizes, and the signature: that it's from an Apple-issued Pass Type ID certificate, still in date, and matches manifest.json.

Can I edit a .pkpass file here?+

No, and editing one by hand breaks its signature. To change a pass, rebuild and re-sign it. WalletPassBuilder lets you design passes visually and update them after they're saved to Wallet.
