- Pick the barcode type. Code 128 suits most things you label yourself; retail products need EAN-13 or UPC-A.
- Type the value. It’s checked as you go, so you can’t download a barcode that won’t scan.
- Set the bar width, height and margin for where it’ll be printed or shown.
- Download SVG for print or PNG for screens, and test it with your scanner.
Barcode types at a glance

Frequently asked questions
Which barcode type should I use?+
Code 128 for anything you label yourself, like stock, assets or membership numbers, because it takes letters and numbers at any length. EAN-13 or UPC-A for products sold in shops. ITF-14 for cartons. PDF417, Aztec or Data Matrix when you need to fit more information, like a ticket.
Is the barcode generator free?+
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit, and you can use the barcodes commercially. It runs in your browser, so what you type isn't sent anywhere.
Can I make an EAN or UPC barcode for my product?+
You can draw the barcode here, but the number itself has to come from GS1, the organization that assigns retail product numbers. Shops and marketplaces check that the number is registered to your company.
What's a check digit?+
The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 number. It's worked out from the other digits so scanners can catch misreads. Type the number without it and it's added for you, or type the full number and it's checked.
What size should I print a barcode?+
Download the SVG and scale that, rather than enlarging a PNG. Keep the margin on each side at least 10 times the narrowest bar, and test a printed sample with the scanner you'll use.
Which barcodes work on Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes?+
Code 128, PDF417, Aztec and QR codes work on both. EAN and UPC barcodes don't, so a store card with an EAN number usually shows it as Code 128 on a wallet pass.
