Coffee shop loyalty card: set up a digital stamp card
The best coffee shop loyalty card is a digital stamp card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet - buy nine coffees, get the tenth free - that customers add by scanning a QR code at the counter. With WalletPassBuilder it takes four steps: pick the coffee stamp card, set the reward, print the sign-up QR code, and stamp cards from a phone. It’s $49 a month with 1,000 pass credits, free to start, and works with Square.

The short answer
Paper punch cards get left in other jackets, and few customers will install an app for one café. A wallet stamp card fixes both: it lives in the Wallet app that’s already on every iPhone and Android phone, and it updates the moment a barista adds a stamp.
- Choose a loyalty template and keep the coffee-cup stamps, or pick your own icon.
- Set the reward and how many stamps it takes, and add your logo and colors.
- Publish it and print the sign-up QR code for the counter.
- Scan each customer’s card to add a stamp - or let Square sales add them.
Choosing the reward
Keep it simple enough to explain in one sentence at the till. The classic works: buy nine, get the tenth free.
| Card | Stamps | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Free drink of any size | 8 to 10 | Most cafés - regulars earn one every few weeks |
| Free pastry or cookie | 6 to 8 | Shops that want to grow food sales |
| Free bag of beans | 10 to 12 | Roasters selling retail coffee |
| Spend toward a reward | e.g. $50 spent | Cafés with a big range of order sizes |
Start every new card with one stamp, for the coffee they’re buying as they sign up. People finish a card they’ve already started far more often than an empty one.
Setting it up
- The card. Your logo, colors and a row of stamps showing progress, with the reward written underneath.
- The sign-up form. Name and phone number or email is plenty. Each extra field costs you sign-ups.
- Both wallets. One design gives iPhone customers an Apple Wallet card and Android customers a Google Wallet card, from the same QR code.
You can design the card before you create an account, and new accounts get free pass credits to publish it.
At the counter
Pick whichever fits how your counter works - you can use more than one:
- Barista scans. Staff scan the customer’s card with a phone or tablet and the stamp appears on it straight away.
- Customer checks in. A tablet on the counter runs a kiosk where customers scan their own card - useful when the queue is long.
- Square adds it. If you take payments with Square, purchases add stamps automatically, with no scanning.
Getting sign-ups
- Ask at the till. “Want a stamp card? Just scan this” beats any poster.
- Put the QR code where people wait. At the till, on the pickup counter and on tables.
- Print it on what leaves the shop. Cup sleeves, receipts and takeaway bags.
- Retire paper cards kindly. Keep honoring paper cards already out there for a few weeks while regulars switch.
Messages that bring people back
Updating the card can put a message on the customer’s lock screen - no app or email address needed. Used sparingly, it’s the best part of a wallet card:
- A new seasonal drink on the day it launches.
- An offer for a quiet afternoon.
- New opening hours, or a holiday closure.
Keep it to a few a month: Google Wallet allows at most three per card in a day, and customers remove cards that send too much. More in wallet pass notifications.
What it costs
Two things: the software and the free drinks. A free coffee that costs about $1.20 to make, after nine $4.50 coffees, is around 3% of the revenue those visits bring in. The customer loyalty plan guide walks through the numbers for your own prices.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best loyalty card for a coffee shop?+
A digital stamp card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet: buy nine coffees, get the tenth free. Customers join by scanning a QR code at the counter, there’s no app to download, and the card can’t be lost like a paper one. WalletPassBuilder sets one up for $49 a month with 1,000 pass credits, free to start.
How many stamps should a coffee loyalty card have?+
Eight to ten. Regulars should earn a reward every two or three weeks; much longer and they stop trying. Starting every new card with one stamp makes the first reward feel closer.
Do customers need to download an app?+
No. The card is saved in Apple Wallet on iPhone or Google Wallet on Android, which are already on the phone. Customers scan a QR code, fill in a short form and tap Add to Wallet.
How do baristas add a stamp?+
They scan the customer’s card with a phone or tablet, and the stamp appears on the card straight away. You can also put a tablet on the counter so customers check in themselves, or let Square sales add stamps automatically.
Can I use a digital stamp card with Square?+
Yes. With WalletPassBuilder’s Square connection, purchases made through Square add stamps to the customer’s card without anyone scanning it.
How much does a coffee shop loyalty program cost?+
The software and the free drinks. WalletPassBuilder is $49 a month or $490 a year with 1,000 pass credits - one per customer card - and stamps and messages don’t use credits. A free coffee that costs about $1.20 to make, after nine $4.50 coffees, is around 3% of what those visits bring in.
