Count Square purchases on loyalty cards

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Connect your Square account and every sale counts on your customers' loyalty cards by itself. A visit card gets a stamp, and a spend card adds the amount. Customers buying for the first time can get a card by email, so there's nothing for your staff to scan or type in.

Before you start

A live loyalty pass in WalletPassBuilder. See Set up a loyalty pass.

A Square account.

In WalletPassBuilder, Full access to every workspace. Each workspace connects its own Square account, and one Square account can only be connected to one workspace.

Connect Square

In WalletPassBuilder, go to Settings, then Square, and click Connect Square.

Sign in to Square and approve WalletPassBuilder's access. You come back to Settings when it's done.

Under Count purchases on a loyalty pass, choose your loyalty pass.

To give first-time buyers a card, tick Email a new card the first time a customer buys.

Click Save. Only sales from this moment on count.

At the register

Attach the customer to the sale before you charge. In Square Point of Sale, tap Add customer on the sale and pick or create the customer, then take the payment as usual. Card, cash and other payment types all count once the payment completes.

A sale with no customer can't be matched to anyone. Square clears the customer after each sale, so attach them again every time. A customer added on the receipt screen after paying isn't on the sale.

Each sale updates the card on the customer's phone within a few seconds. You'll see it under Recent purchases in Settings, Square.

How customers are matched

Customers who already have a card, for example from your sign-up form or the scanner, are matched by phone number. They need the same phone number in Square and on their card.

New customers: with Email a new card on, their first purchase creates a card filled in from their Square customer profile and emails it to them in your business's name. On a visit card, that first purchase is their first stamp; on a spend card, it's their first spend. After that, their card is linked to their Square customer, so later sales always find it.

Cards are only emailed to customers with an email address in Square who haven't unsubscribed from your emails there. Each new card uses one pass credit. See How pass credits work.

If your sign-up form has a checkbox the customer must tick themselves, such as agreeing to terms, no card is created from a sale. They can still join with the form.

Good to know

Scanning the card is fine, but don't also tap Add stamp (or Record purchase) for a sale that goes through Square. A scan only opens the customer's card. The Square sale already adds the stamp, so tapping the button as well counts the purchase twice. The scanner is still the way to count visits that don't go through Square. See Scan and record visits.

Each payment counts once, even when Square updates it several times.

Refunds in Square don't take a stamp or spend back off a card.

Sales from before you saved your loyalty pass, or more than 7 days old, are skipped.

WalletPassBuilder only reads your Square data. It never changes anything in Square, and can't take or refund payments.

To stop, click Disconnect in Settings, Square, or remove the app in your Square Dashboard.

Recent purchases

Each sale is listed with what happened to it:

Counted on their card: a stamp or the spend was added.

New card created and emailed: a first-time buyer got a card.

No customer on this sale: no customer was attached at the register.

No card for this customer: they don't have a card and Email a new card is off, or their phone number doesn't match their card.

No card: the customer has no email in Square, or they unsubscribed there.

No card: you're out of pass credits.
