How to add an insurance card to Apple Wallet
Insurance cards are easy to forget and awkward to find at the front desk. Putting yours in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet keeps it on your phone. This guide covers the three ways to do it, what to expect when you show it, and - for insurers and agencies - how to issue official digital ID cards your customers can add in one tap.

The short answer
- Best: use your insurer’s app or website. If it has an Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Wallet button, you get an official card that updates by itself.
- No button? On iPhone (iOS 27 and later), open Wallet, tap + and choose Create a Pass to make your own copy.
- On Android in the US, use Google Wallet’s Everything else option to create a pass from a photo of the card.
Option 1: from your insurer
Many health, auto and other insurers offer a digital ID card in their app or member website, and some let you add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
- Sign in to your insurer’s app or member website.
- Find your ID card - often under “ID card”, “Coverage” or “Documents”.
- Tap Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Wallet, then Add.
An official pass carries your insurer’s branding and can update when your plan, group or coverage dates change. For more on adding passes, see how to add a pass to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
Option 2: Create a Pass on iPhone (iOS 27 and later)
- Open Wallet, tap +, and choose Create a Pass.
- Pick a template - Membership or Standard works well for an insurance card.
- Fill in the details: your name, member or policy ID, group number, plan name and the insurer’s phone numbers.
- If your card has a barcode or QR code, add it. Depending on your iPhone, you may be able to scan the card or a screenshot to fill in the details automatically.
- Check everything against your physical card, then save.
On Android: Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet and tap Add to Wallet.
- Choose Everything else, then take a photo of your card or pick one you already have.
- Check the details Google suggests - and the pass type, such as health or car insurance - then save.
Google treats passes with health information as private: they aren’t synced to your other devices, and you need to unlock to open them. Everything else is available in the US; elsewhere you may see a Photo option that works with a barcode or QR code.
Official card vs your own copy
| Official pass from your insurer | A copy you create | |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Your insurer | You |
| Updates when your plan changes | Yes | No - edit it yourself |
| Accepted everywhere | Generally, like the insurer’s card | Usually, but some places want the official card |
| Branding | Your insurer’s | Plain template |
| Available | If your insurer offers it | iOS 27+, or Google Wallet in the US |
Vehicle insurance cards
A vehicle insurance card - your proof of auto insurance - is one of the most useful cards to keep on your phone, because you need it at a traffic stop, after an accident, at registration or when renting a car. Add it the same way: from your insurer’s app if it offers Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or with Create a Pass on iPhone or Everything else in Google Wallet.
If you make your own copy, include what’s on the official card:
- The insured names and the policy number.
- The policy’s effective and expiry dates.
- The vehicle’s year, make, model and VIN.
- The insurer’s name and its company code, if shown.
- The claims and roadside assistance phone numbers.
Using it at the doctor, pharmacy or roadside
- At the front desk: open Wallet, tap the card and show it, or read out your member ID and group number.
- At the pharmacy: the pharmacist may need your BIN, PCN and group numbers, so include them if they’re on your card.
- Car insurance: most US states accept electronic proof of insurance, but rules differ, so check yours - and remember an officer may need to hold your phone.
Keeping it private
- Only add what you need. Your member ID and phone numbers are usually enough; you don’t need your full medical history on a pass.
- Lock your phone. Anyone who can open your phone can see your passes.
- Don’t share screenshots of the card publicly - it’s as sensitive as the plastic one.
For insurers and agencies
Customers are already making their own copies of your card. An official wallet card gives them something better - and gives you a channel to them:
- Always current. When a policy renews or coverage changes, the card on the customer’s phone updates.
- One tap to add from the welcome email, the renewal email or your portal, on iPhone and Android.
- Renewal reminders on the lock screen before a policy lapses.
- Your branding and contact numbers, including claims and roadside assistance lines, on the back of the card.
A note on health insurance data
Health plan member details are protected health information. Before issuing health ID cards through any third-party tool, check your obligations - in the US, HIPAA - and what agreements that tool offers. Auto, home, pet and travel insurance cards don’t carry the same restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Can you add an insurance card to Apple Wallet?+
Yes. If your insurer offers an Add to Apple Wallet button in its app or website, use that - the card stays up to date. Otherwise, on iOS 27 or later you can make your own copy with Create a Pass in the Wallet app.
How do I add my health insurance card to Apple Wallet?+
Check your insurer’s app first for an Add to Apple Wallet option. If there isn’t one, open Wallet, tap +, choose Create a Pass, and fill in a template with your member ID, group number and the insurer’s phone numbers, adding the card’s barcode or QR code if it has one.
Can I add my car insurance card to Apple Wallet?+
Yes, the same way: your insurer’s app if it offers it, or Create a Pass on iOS 27 or later. Most US states accept electronic proof of auto insurance, but the rules vary, so check your state and keep the insurer’s official card handy too.
Can I add an insurance card to Google Wallet?+
In the US, the Google Wallet app’s Everything else option creates a pass from a photo of your card and includes health and car insurance card types. Health insurance passes are treated as private: they aren’t synced to other devices and need authentication to open.
Will a provider accept my insurance card from Apple Wallet?+
Many will, but a copy you made yourself isn’t issued by your insurer, so some offices or pharmacies may still ask for the official card. If you rely on it, ask ahead or carry the insurer’s card as a backup.
Does the card update when my plan changes?+
An official pass from your insurer can update automatically. A copy you create yourself won’t - edit it or make a new one when your details change.
