Add a blurred background image (Apple Wallet)
Last updated: October 25, 2026
Apple Wallet can show an image behind the whole front of your pass. Apple blurs it and crops it to fit, so it works best as a soft wash of colour rather than a detailed photo. Pick one of 10 ready-made backgrounds or upload your own.
Add a background
Open your pass in the builder.
In Settings, open Advanced settings.
Under Apple Specific Settings, find Background image (Apple).
Click one of the backgrounds, or click the first circle to upload your own image. The preview switches to Apple so you can see the result straight away.
Click Create pass, or Update pass for a pass you've already created. People who already have the pass get the new background when their pass updates.
To remove the background, click None.
The ready-made backgrounds
There are 10: Sunset, Ocean, Forest, Berry, Midnight, Coffee, Citrus, Rose gold, Lavender and Mint. Picking one also sets your Apple text and label colours so they're easy to read: white on the darker backgrounds, and black on Citrus, Rose gold, Lavender and Mint. You can change them afterwards in Brand colors.
Upload your own image
Shape: Apple's background is a tall rectangle, 180 × 220 points. The cropper keeps that shape, so choose the part of your image you want to show.
Detail: Apple blurs the image heavily, so text or a logo in it won't be readable. Colours, textures and soft photos work best.
Text colour: Apple doesn't use your background colour when a background image is set, so pick a text and label colour in Brand colors that reads on your image.
Removing it: click the ✕ on your uploaded image, or click None.
Which passes can have a background
Background and thumbnail layouts: yes.
Hero image layout: only when the pass has no Apple hero image, because Apple Wallet can't show a hero image and a background image together. Remove the Apple hero image in Brand assets to use a background. On a pass with image rules, anyone whose rule gives them a hero image sees the hero image instead.
Loyalty passes and poster event tickets: no. The stamps and the poster artwork take the same place on the pass.
When a background isn't available, the backgrounds are dimmed. Click them to see why.
What else changes
Pass shape on iPhone: Apple shows a pass with a background image in its event ticket shape, which has a small notch cut into the top edge.
Title: your pass title stays large, as on a pass without a background.
Google Wallet: nothing changes. Google Wallet passes keep your background colour.
